Upgrade 2025

We will upgrade Moodle, the University’s virtual learning environment, to version 4.5 in July. There will be a period of downtime for each Moodle instance while it is upgraded.

The upgrade will take place on the dates below:

  • Assessment Moodle – Thursday 10 July
  • Main Moodle and Course History Moodle – Thursday 17 July

Upgrading to version 4.5 will introduce improvements and new features. Many of the changes in this upgrade are designed to make creating and editing courses more efficient and intuitive.

A new course format:

  • Custom sections is the new default format, replacing Topics format.
  • Sections can now contain a single layer of subsections which creates additional ways to organise content.

Improved course editing:

  • Activities or resources can be added anywhere within the course via the new add content + plus icon.
  • Bulk editing provides the ability to delete, move, duplicate, hide or change visibility of multiple content items.
  • Entire sections can be duplicated.
  • New icons allow quick editing of settings for availability, restrictions and group mode.
  • Permalinks to sections can be generated easily.

Rich text editor changes:

  • TinyMCE is the new default rich text editor.
  • The previous default editor, Atto, is still available but will be discontinued during the next upgrade.
  • The Atto Chemistry editor has been discontinued.
  • It is possible to select your preferred editor in your personal settings.
